I am beyond thrilled to announce that I have been cast as Sara Jane Moore in Ray of Light Theatre’s Production of Sondheim’s Assassins! This has been a dream role for some time, and I couldn’t be more excited about it!
The show will run from June 2, 2011 - June 25, 2011 at the Eureka Theatre in San Francisco. Stay Tuned for more info!
Last year, I participated in a staged reading of Abigail Dreary, the haunting play written by my dear friend, Michelle Ianiro. Well, this year, Abigail Dreary will receive its world premiere at Boxcar Theatre, with Yours Truly reprising her role as Sharon, the mother of 3 teenaged children struggling to get along in a new place, one of whom has a frightening encounter with Abigail Dreary.
The show will run July 16, 2011 - August 7, 2011 at Boxcar Theatre. Stay tuned for more info!
I will be participating in Shotgun Players‘ World Premiere of “Beardo” in March and April. I will be singing in the vocal ensemble. It should be a fascinating piece at one of the most exciting theatre companies in the Bay Area.
Beardo is a brand, spanking new musical about Rasputin, the revered and reviled Russian mystic who grew close with the Russian royal family before the abdication and October Revolution of 1917. Playwright Jason Craig’s work, Beowulf: A Thousand Years of Baggage premiered at Shotgun in 2008, also in collaboration with composer Dave Malloy. That show won the Glickman Award for best new play to premiere in the Bay Area and had a very successful run in NYC and continues to tour. Malloy’s current show, Three Pianos, is now running at the New York Theater Workshop.
As you may or may not know, I have spent the past several months undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer. During that time, I had little energy or time for what I love most, namely performing. However, the chemotherapy beast is now over, and though I still have more treatments to undergo over the next months and years, I am recovering and very excited to start auditioning again.
First point of business: new headshots! I did lose all my hair during chemo (you may have seen me bald onstage in “Jerry Springer, the Opera”), and though I do have a wig, I decided to have photos taken with and without the hair. I don’t know how long it will take to re-grow my hair, and I wanted to be honest about who I was and what I look like. So, I visited Ben at Ben Krantz Studio in Oakland and had him shoot me with my wig and without. You can see the final results in the “Gallery” section. I couldn’t be more thrilled with the results.
Hope to see you at an audition soon.
October 16, 2010 was officially declared “Ray of Light Theatre Day” in the City of San Francisco. City
Supervisor Bevan Dufty was onhand at the final performance of “Jerry Springer, the Opera” to present the company with a certificate.
Jerry Springer, the Opera played to huge crowds and rave reveiws. I am immensely proud to have been a part of such a talented cast and exciting production. It was a difficult 4 months with my own personal hell to go through (as opposed to the hell Jerry Springer was going through in every performance), but I’m thrilled that I was able to be a part of it.
Many of you probably already know this, but I was diagnosed with breast cancer in June, 2010. It was an
immense shock, of course, but I decided that cancer was not going to stop my life or curtail my passion. I had already been cast in Jerry Springer, the Opera at Ray of Light Theatre, and I decided to keep my commitment to the show. I have been receiving chemotherapy since the beginning of rehearsals and have unfortunately lost all my hair. However, on the bright side, I now have a lot more variety in my look. I love scarves, hats and wigs, and I try to use them to my best advantage.
While doing the show, I am taking a break from auditioning for anything else. I get very fatigued from the chemo and I’m not able to do more than one thing at a time. However, once the show is over, I plan to do some more auditions, if anyone is looking for a bald woman. Chemo should be finished by the end of November, and hopefully my energy will pick up from there, so that I can get back to the career I am so passionate about.
I have a blog at CaringBridge all about my cancer treatment. CaringBridge is a wonderful site that allows patients or their families to keep family and friends updated about their health and treatments. I highly recommend them and support them in their efforts. You can read my blog here.
